I'd like to write a story about your website for the BYU Daily Universe. Email me at littleramona76@yahoo.com so I can give you a call soon!
I read an article in the Daily Universe this morning about your website and your campaign for raising $40,000. While I think it's great that you want to go back to college, I must admit that I am appauled at your approach of raising money. There are thousands of people in your same situation, and yet many more thousands who are much worse than you. You are in the position you are because you choose it. You want to go to Cambridge...well some people can't afford to go to college at all. I was especially suprised to see you took a trip to Tel-Aviv? How many thousands did this cost you? Your request for money is ridiculous. I think it is wrong. At the least, you could offer to repay every one of those people just like the LDS church asks of those who it gives to through its Perpetual Education Fund. We should learn to be self sufficient in this life. Going to Grad school at Cambridge is a great thing, but its not a neccessity and I think it is a very low-class act to publicly ask for help to fund your way there. I am approx. $40,000 in debt right now myself (school loans for my wife and I). Our parents could help us but they don't, for which I am very greatful. Instead, I work harder and harder, and I deal with paying interest on those loans, and I sacrafice other luxuries. I hope you make it to Cambridge, I really do, but I also hope you do so in a respectable way, and this (website) is not at all in my opinion respectable.
As I stated in my blog, I went to Tel Aviv on a free ticket and stayed with my best friend, which cost me nothing. Repaying $1 to 40,000 people who want to help me attend Columbia also seems rather ridiculous, but I hope some day to create a scholarship for film students. I've kept a detailed account of everyone who has donated and if anyone would like his/her money back at the end of my education, I'd be happy to return it. I'm sorry you think using the internet is unclassy. I'm sorry I cannot qualify for $40,000 in loans (trust me, if I could I would because asking for money is embarrassing and hard). I'm grateful I worked my way through my undergrad degree at BYU, I know what it is to work hard and save. However, at this time I cannot raise, nor can I qualify for loans equaling $40,000, which is why I started this campaign.
It seems to me that those who oppose your fund raising methods are just upset that they didn't think of them first. I'm sending you a dollar right now and telling everyone I know to do the same! Good luck!
P.S. I hope Mr. Anonymous above learns how to read! I think you made it quite clear that your trip to Tel Aviv was free. Also, how many times have you mentioned that you are going to COLUMBIA? Columbia, it's a university in NYC. Where did Cambridge come from? Is it because you lived in Cambridge, MA? If he would like to identify himself, I would be more than happy to pay for a couple reading classes.
Myself, I'm just amazed that someone who claims to have a university-level education could be
a) so exceptionally judgemental of a complete stranger,
b) incapable of basic reading comprehension, and
c) unable to spell "appalled," "necessity," "grateful" or "sacrifice" correctly.
